Ferrol approves strategic actions for UNESCO World Heritage bid

The local government of Ferrol has approved a strategic plan consisting of seven key actions to strengthen its candidacy for the UNESCO World Heritage designation of ‘Ferrol. Porto da Ilustración’. The initiative focuses on increasing citizen engagement, social involvement, and public awareness, which are essential requirements for the UNESCO process.

The program includes several specific initiatives: a scientific congress marking the 300th anniversary of Ferrol’s status as a departmental city; the ‘Embaixadores do Patrimonio’ program featuring audiovisual campaigns; and a dedicated cycle of activities centered on the San Felipe Castle to highlight its historical and architectural importance. Additionally, the plan incorporates the sixth edition of the ‘Semana do Patrimonio Invisible’, the ‘Festival Ilustrado’, a media plan, and the creation of specific merchandising.

The total budget for these activities is 118,148 euros. To fund the program, the local government intends to request that the Deputación da Coruña cover 80% of the costs.
