Kyrenia ferry shipwreck leaves at least eight dead and many missing

A passenger catamaran, the FiloJet, capsized off the coast of Kyrenia (Girne) while traveling toward Taşucu, Turkey. The vessel was carrying 267 people, consisting of 259 passengers and 8 crew members.

At least eight people have been confirmed dead, and search and rescue operations are ongoing for approximately 18 to 23 missing individuals. Rescuers have successfully brought 237 to 249 people to safety. The shipwreck is located at a depth of approximately 514 meters.

Authorities have launched a wide-scale investigation. Nine individuals, including the captain, seven crew members, and a company official, appeared in court facing charges of negligent homicide. Survivors have reported hearing a possible explosion near the bow before the vessel began taking on water. In response to the tragedy, a three-day period of mourning has been declared in Northern Cyprus.
