Filo Jet ferry shipwreck off Northern Cyprus
Overview
On August 30, 2026, the passenger catamaran Filo Jet, owned by Filo Denizcilik, capsized and sank off the coast of Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus, while traveling toward Taşucu, Turkey. The vessel was carrying 267 people, including 259 passengers and eight crew members. Initial reports confirmed at least eight deaths, with the number of missing individuals estimated between 17 and 23. Approximately 237 to 249 people were rescued. The vessel rests at a depth of approximately 514 meters, complicating recovery efforts. Search and rescue operations have mobilized significant maritime and aerial resources from both Northern Cyprus and Turkey, including helicopters, coast guard boats, and drones. As of September 1, the Turkish Navy has deployed the specialized vessel TCG IŞIN (A-583) to the site. This ship is equipped with remote-controlled underwater vehicles and atmospheric diving suits to search for missing persons and the ship’s data recorder. Current figures indicate eight confirmed dead and approximately 20 people remain missing, including two children, with 239 individuals successfully rescued. Northern Cypriot Prime Minister Ünal Üstel described the event as the region’s largest maritime disaster and declared three days of national mourning. The vessel issued a mayday call at 12:10 local time after water entered the hull during an August storm. Investigations are ongoing into potential negligence. The captain, seven crew members, and a company official have been detained, with the captain and crew facing charges of negligent homicide. Survivors have provided conflicting accounts, with some reporting an explosion near the bow and others alleging a lack of life jackets, poor evacuation organization, or that the captain abandoned the vessel early. By September 2, the death toll rose to nine following the recovery of a man’s body, which was transported to the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Nicosia.
