Festival Caju to promote literacy for indigenous students in Bahia

The 5th edition of the Festival Caju de Leitores is scheduled to take place from September 2 to 4 at Oca Tururim, located in Aldeia Xandó within the Barra Velha Indigenous Territory in Porto Seguro, Bahia.

Established in 2022, the festival aims to enhance the reading and writing skills of local indigenous students. This initiative responds to the increased presence of public and private educational institutions in the region, such as the Federal University of Southern Bahia (UFSB) and the Federal Institute of Bahia (IFBA). Event director Joanna Savaglia stated that the goal is to provide students with the necessary tools for text comprehension and essay writing to succeed in entrance exams and national assessments like the Enem.

The theme for this year’s edition is ‘Manifesto de Bichos’ (Animals' Manifesto), focusing on local fauna. This follows previous themes centered on territory, flora, and trees, maintaining the festival's connection to the environment and indigenous worldviews.
