The 5th edition of the Caju de Leitores Festival is taking place from September 2 to 4, 2026, at Oca Tururim in Xandó Village, within the Barra Velha Indigenous Territory in Porto Seguro, Bahia. Under the theme ‘Um Manifesto de Bichos’ (An Animal Manifesto), the event focuses on local fauna, continuing a tradition of themes centered on territory, flora, and trees.

As the festival progresses, initial activities have emphasized the Patxohã language. Sessions have focused on teaching children ancestral words for animals, such as ‘Mukusuy’ (fish) and ‘Exna’ (jaguar), to affirm Pataxó identity and connect younger generations to their territory.

The event has also facilitated cross-border cultural exchanges between Brazil and Argentina. Discussions led by Argentine indigenous leader Mariela Tulián and various Brazilian writers have explored the connections between spirituality, territory, and literary production across the Abya Yala region.

This edition continues to honor Pataxó elder Maria Coruja, a master of ancestral wisdom and survivor of the ‘Fogo de 51’ violence. Alongside Coruja, writer Auritha Tabajara is part of a program designed to enhance the literacy and cultural connection of local indigenous students, providing them with tools to succeed in national assessments like the Enem.
