Brazil hosts diverse film festivals and community audiovisual projects
Brazil is hosting various cinematic initiatives and festivals across the country. The 28th edition of the Festival do Rio features a diverse lineup, including the Premiere Brasil showcase with 110 films. Notable screenings include a documentary on actress Fernanda Montenegro, Carlos Saldanha’s ‘100 Dias’ about navigator Amyr Klink, and Lucia Murat’s ‘O Sertão das Nossas Memórias’, which explores the history of the military dictatorship.
Other regional cultural events include the 36th Cine Ceará Ibero-American Film Festival, the FINTCH international film and humor festival in Duque de Caxias, and the ODS 2030 showcase in Itapipoca, which uses film to discuss sustainable development goals in public schools. Additionally, the ‘Cine Sesi + Curta Periferias’ project in Rio de Janeiro highlights short films produced by youth from the Maré community using mobile phones to share their local narratives.
Long-standing projects like ‘Vídeo nas Aldeias’, founded by Vincent Carelli in 1986, continue to be recognized for empowering indigenous peoples to control their own audiovisual representation and cultural identity.
