FIA appeal filed over Pierre Gasly's restored Monaco podium
A timing‑loop error at the Monaco Grand Prix caused false pit‑lane speed penalties for several drivers, including Pierre Gasly, who received a double five‑second penalty that dropped him from third to seventh place. After Alpine requested a Right of Review, the FIA stewards rescinded Gasly's penalties and reinstated his podium finish, demoting Isack Hadjar to fourth and affecting Oscar Piastri's position.
McLaren and Red Bull have each lodged an appeal with the FIA International Court of Appeal, challenging the documents that amended the race classification, championship standings and Gasly’s restored podium. Both teams are concerned that the precedent could encourage drivers to ignore penalties during a race and contest them afterward, potentially altering race strategy.
Mercedes initially explored a similar review of George Russell’s Monaco penalty but withdrew its application after discussions with the FIA. A hearing for the appeals is expected in July, after which the court will decide whether to uphold, modify or overturn the decision to restore Gasly’s podium.
