FIA approves Formula One power‑unit rule changes for 2027‑28

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) announced a package of technical rule changes for Formula One that will increase the proportion of power from internal‑combustion engines and reduce the electric component for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The balance will shift from the current 53%‑47% split to 58%‑42% in 2027 and 60%‑40% in 2028, with fuel‑flow allowances rising by 5% in 2027 and 13% in 2028. Maximum ICE power will increase from 400 kW to 420 kW in 2027 and to 450 kW in 2028. The changes aim to lessen the need for artificial energy‑management strategies, improve flat‑out qualifying performance and address driver concerns that recent races have become overly constrained by battery‑recharging requirements. The proposal, agreed with teams, power‑unit manufacturers and Liberty Media, will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council for formal approval on 23 June.
