Verstappen crash, safety probe and contract talks
Overview
The FIA opened a formal safety investigation into the rotating rear‑wing systems used by Red Bull and Ferrari after Max Verstappen’s high‑speed crashes at Silverstone and in Austrian qualifying. The probe will assess compliance with the 2026 rule that caps wing‑position changes at 400 ms and could lead to a season‑long ban. Red Bull has said it may revert to a conventional rear wing, while Ferrari remains under review. A photographed meeting in Amsterdam between Helmut Marko, Jos Verstappen and manager Raymond Vermeulen has renewed speculation about Verstappen’s contract beyond 2028. Neither Red Bull nor the driver has commented, and Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto stressed that their off‑track friendship remains strong even if a future title fight makes them rivals. Verstappen’s contract includes an early‑exit clause that could be triggered if he is not in the top two by the mid‑season break; sitting seventh with 76 points, his future at Red Bull is legally uncertain. Rumours of a seat swap with Oscar Piastri have been denied, and Red Bull is reportedly scouting 21‑year‑old Ollie Bearman of Haas as a contingency. Separately, the FIA revised the technical regulations for the 2027‑28 seasons, allowing each team to run up to four internal‑combustion engines, turbochargers and exhaust systems while keeping limits on batteries, ECUs and MGU‑Ks. The change aims to give teams more flexibility, improve reliability and support a gradual shift toward a 60/40 internal‑combustion‑electric power split by 2028. Media reports of a possible move by Verstappen to McLaren for 2027 were publicly dismissed by Oscar Piastri’s manager Mark Webber and McLaren CEO Zak Brown. The rumors sparked further discussion of Red Bull’s contingency plans, including the Bearman prospect.
