FIA approves new power unit balance and Heat Hazard rules for Formula 1

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) confirmed a package of technical rule changes for Formula 1 at its World Motor Sport Council meeting. The reforms increase the proportion of power generated by internal‑combustion engines to 58 % in 2027 and 60 % in 2028, while reducing the electric contribution, and raise fuel‑flow limits to add roughly 20 kW in 2027 and 30 kW in 2028.

The FIA also introduced immediate amendments: a separate Heat Hazard protocol can now be issued for a sprint race and the main Grand Prix when temperatures exceed 31 °C, allowing organisers greater flexibility. In addition, pre‑season winter testing has been extended from three days to four days to give teams more time to adapt to the new technical landscape. These changes take effect immediately and will shape the sport’s engineering direction from the 2027 season onward.
