FIA plans gradual rise of combustion power in Formula 1 engines by 2028

Current Formula 1 cars produce just over 1,000 PS, with the latest figures around 1,060 PS. The all‑time record of 1,430 PS was set by a 1986 BMW turbo engine.

The FIA announced that for the 2027 season fuel flow will be increased by 5 %, raising internal‑combustion power from 400 kW to 420 kW. At the same time the maximum output of the electric motor will be reduced from 350 kW to 300 kW, while the over‑take boost remains at 350 kW and the regenerative‑braking limit rises to 375 kW. A further fuel‑flow increase in 2028 will boost combustion power to 450 kW and set the regenerative limit at 400 kW, creating a 60 % combustion‑40 % electric power split.

These adjustments aim to address energy‑management concerns, give power‑unit manufacturers more budget flexibility, and will be presented for ratification to the FIA World Motor Sport Council at its June meeting in Macau.
