FIA reaches agreement on 2027‑28 Formula One power‑unit rule changes

The FIA, together with the Formula One Management (FOM), the teams and power‑unit manufacturers, has agreed on a package of technical, sporting and financial rule changes for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The reforms gradually rebalance the contribution of the internal‑combustion engine (ICE) and the energy‑recovery system, raising ICE power from 400 kW to 420 kW in 2027 and 450 kW in 2028, and adjusting fuel‑flow limits by 5 % and 13 % respectively. Battery power will be limited to 300 kW in 2027, with a special “overtake mode” of 350 kW, and the overall ICE‑to‑battery power ratio will shift to 58 %/42 % in 2027 and 60 %/40 % in 2028.

The agreement will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council for formal approval on 23 June at the council meeting in Macau, allowing teams and manufacturers to plan for the revised regulations.
