FIA reversal of Pierre Gasly penalty triggers Monaco Grand Prix protest
The FIA annulled the pit‑lane speed penalty that had dropped Pierre Gasly from third to seventh at the Monaco Grand Prix, restoring his podium finish. Red Bull and McLaren lodged formal protests with the FIA International Court of Appeal, paying a €5,000 filing fee and a €20,000 deposit. Each team has 15 days to submit arguments, followed by another 15 days for the FIA to respond, with a possible hearing on 31 July.
Gasly defended the reversal, saying the error – a 77‑metre shortfall in the speed‑sensor measurement that wrongly penalised five drivers – needed correction, but he also acknowledged the sense of injustice felt by rivals Oscar Piastri and George Russell. The outcome could alter driver and constructor points as the season moves toward the Canadian Grand Prix.
