FIA announces Formula 1 regulation changes for 2027 and 2028

The FIA has approved several significant regulatory changes for Formula 1, focusing on budget cap enforcement and race distances. To prevent teams from bypassing spending limits through other business units, new 2027 operational regulations will mandate a strict physical, digital, and personnel separation between F1 departments and other projects like Formula E, WEC, or product development. This includes restrictions on shared technological assets such as simulators and wind tunnels, as well as mandatory waiting periods for staff transferring between divisions.

Additionally, the FIA confirmed that Grand Prix race distances will be temporarily reduced from 305 kilometers to 290 kilometers for the 2027 season. This measure is intended to help teams adapt to new power unit regulations that shift the balance toward internal combustion engines, which will increase fuel consumption. The reduction aims to avoid the immediate need for costly chassis redesigns to accommodate larger fuel tanks. The standard 305-kilometer race distance is scheduled to return in 2028 as the power unit ratio stabilizes.
