The shift aims to transition power distribution from a 50/50 split to a 58/42 ratio in 2027, and eventually 60/40 in 2028. Because most teams intend to carry over their 2026 chassis designs, shortening the races allows them to utilize more thermal power without the cost-prohibitive necessity of redesigning chassis and fuel tanks to accommodate higher fuel consumption.

Additionally, drivers have noted that current hybrid regulations cause performance fluctuations due to energy management issues. During the 2026 season, drivers specifically reported challenges with electrical energy depletion causing significant speed drops in braking zones at high-speed tracks like Monza. The 2027 changes are intended to provide more consistent power delivery and improve the racing spectacle. The proposal now awaits formal ratification by the FIA Formula 1 Commission and the Motorsport World Council.
