Fiat plans aggressive expansion with new Grizzly SUV
Fiat is implementing a new strategic direction focused on its core identity of small cars while expanding its lineup. Gaetano Thorel, the European head of Fiat and Abarth, indicated that the brand is seeing a recovery, with European registrations growing by 21.7% in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, surpassing 100,000 monthly sales.
A key component of this growth is the upcoming Grizzly, a C-segment SUV approximately 4.5 meters long. Originally designed for global markets like Turkey and Latin America, the project has been adapted for Europe to serve as a larger alternative to the Grande Panda. The Grizzly will utilize the Smart Car platform to manage costs and will be available in gasoline, hybrid, and electric versions. Thorel suggested the vehicle’s pricing could “shock the market” due to its competitive positioning.
While models like the Panda and Grande Panda are driving success, Thorel noted that the 500 Hybrid has not yet met his high expectations. The brand continues to focus on its role within Stellantis by balancing its heritage of compact vehicles with new, larger family-oriented models.
