Magnus Carlsen joins inaugural Total Chess World Championship Tour pilot in Budapest

World number one Magnus Carlsen will compete in the pilot edition of the FIDE‑approved Total Chess World Championship Tour, slated for 10‑21 November in Budapest. The tournament will combine blitz, rapid and fast‑classic formats, with results from all three disciplines merged to crown the overall champion. Organisers say the event serves as a blueprint for the full circuit, which will launch in March 2027 and feature four annual tournaments in different cities worldwide.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich highlighted the tour’s aim to attract new audiences, commercial partners and greater media interest, describing it as a new era for chess competition. The pilot enjoys backing from sports figures such as footballer Erling Haaland and Olympic skier Johannes Klaebo, who have invested in the venture. The Budapest event is positioned as the first step toward a global championship that rewards versatility, consistency and adaptability across the three time‑control disciplines.
