Fidel Castro centenary sparks nationwide events in Cuba
Cuba is marking the 2026 centenary of Fidel Castro's birth with a series of coordinated events across the island. From August 6‑9, Havana will host the IV Continental Assembly of ALBA Movements, bringing more than 150 delegates from 25 countries to discuss popular unity and anti‑neoliberal strategies. In Pinar del Río, the provincial chess commission announced the "Copa 13 de Agosto" tournament, running August 6‑13 at the José Raúl Capablanca Academy, featuring blitz and standard formats.
Cienfuegos launched a multidimensional cultural program under provincial party secretary Armando Carranza Valladares, with exhibitions, street parades, concerts and youth activities scheduled from August 14‑16, alongside celebrations for the Federation of Cuban Women. In Guantánamo, a political song day opened, while campesinos in Cienfuegos organized food deliveries, blood drives, and agricultural cooperatives to honor the centenary and the 68th anniversary of the First Peasant Congress in Arms, highlighted by President of the National Small Farmers Association Jazmín Jiménez Álvarez.
These activities, coordinated by Cuban ministries, party organs and local groups, aim to reinforce revolutionary symbolism and showcase solidarity amid ongoing U.S. sanctions.
