Fidesz appeals to EU over alleged constitutional coup by Tisza government

Fidesz and KDNP Members of the European Parliament have formally appealed to EU Commissioner Michael McGrath, alleging that the Tisza-led government is establishing an authoritarian regime in Hungary.

The opposition MEPs claim the government has executed a “constitutional coup” through several actions, including the removal of President Tamás Sulyok from office, the dismissal of the Constitutional Court president and several members via retroactive legislation, and the forced resignation of the Chief Prosecutor through political pressure. They also cited the failure to vote on Fidesz and KDNP nominees for the Media Council and the alleged unlawful seizure of party assets by prosecutors.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar has dismissed these allegations as “ridiculous and laughable,” arguing that Fidesz is hypocritically appealing to the same EU institutions it spent years attacking.

Separately, reports from Norwegian public broadcaster NRK indicate a deteriorating relationship between the Tisza government and the international press. Journalists reported being denied a pre-arranged interview with the Prime Minister and faced threats from the Prime Minister’s office regarding their attempts to contact other government officials.
