EU-Hungary rule of law dispute

Overview

Tensions have escalated between Hungarian political factions and European Union institutions regarding the rule of law and constitutional integrity in Hungary.

Initially, more than forty right-wing and conservative MEPs submitted written questions to the European Commission concerning the 17th amendment to the Hungarian Constitution. These MEPs challenged provisions regarding the premature termination of the President’s mandate, the exclusion of veteran politicians from elections, and the immediate termination of terms for Constitutional Court judges. European Commissioner Michael McGrath stated the Commission is monitoring these developments as part of its oversight of the rule of law.

Subsequently, MEPs from the Fidesz and KDNP parties formally requested a position from Commissioner McGrath, alleging that the Tisza government is constructing an autocratic system. The MEPs characterized recent government actions as a “constitutional coup,” citing the removal of President Tamás Sulyok, the use of retroactive legislation to remove members of the Constitutional Court, and political pressure applied to the Chief Prosecutor. Additional allegations include the refusal to vote on media council nominees and the seizure of parliamentary group assets by prosecutors.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar has dismissed these allegations as “ridiculous and laughable,” accusing Fidesz of hypocrisy for appealing to EU institutions it previously attacked. Concurrently, reports from the Norwegian broadcaster NRK suggest a deteriorating relationship between the Tisza government and the international press, noting that journalists have been denied interviews with the Prime Minister and faced threats from his office when attempting to contact other officials.
