Hungary to Publish Hospital Infection Data Publicly from September 2026

The National Public Health and Medical Officer Service (NNGYK) has finalized a methodology for publicly releasing institutional data on health‑care‑associated infections. Starting in September 2026 the data, derived from the National Nosocomial Surveillance System (NNSR), will be accessible to patients, the public and health professionals. The system is intended to strengthen patient safety and improve transparency of Hungarian hospitals, not to create simple rankings. The methodology requires uniform definitions, validated surveillance procedures and the inclusion of supplemental indicators that reflect case‑mix, treatment complexity and detection intensity, ensuring the figures are interpreted correctly. The framework was drafted after extensive consultation with infection‑control experts, professional bodies and hospital staff. The publication aims to support infection‑prevention efforts, enable quality improvement in health‑care institutions and provide a reliable basis for monitoring trends across the country.
