Fies debt renegotiation deadline set for September 16

Students with Fies (Student Financing Fund) debts have until September 16, 2026, to join the Desenrola Fies 2026 program. This initiative offers discounts and facilitated conditions for renegotiating contracts. The program is available to students with contracts signed up to 2017 who were in the amortization phase as of May 4, 2026. It covers both current and overdue accounts, including those with names registered in credit delinquency databases. Once the renegotiation is formalized and the down payment is made, the names of students and guarantors can be removed from delinquency registries.

Renegotiation must be conducted through Banco do Brasil or Caixa Econômica Federal via digital channels or, in specific cases, in person. Discounts vary by contract; for example, some students in the CadÚnico program may reach up to 99% discounts, while others may receive 100% off interest and fines for long-term arrears. Students with contracts signed from January 1, 2018, onwards, or those still in the use or grace periods, are ineligible.

Separately, the Brazilian Association of Higher Education Maintainers (ABMES) has sent an open letter to presidential candidates proposing the modernization of Fies and the strengthening of ProUni. The association, representing 80% of higher education maintainers, advocates for higher education to be treated as a state policy and calls for clearer regulatory rules and new financing mechanisms.
