Fietsersbond and Haskoning launch national bollard safety check
The Fietsersbond and Haskoning are organizing a national ‘Paaltjescheckdag’ (Bollard Check Day) on Saturday, September 19. The initiative aims to identify dangerous bollards on bicycle paths across the Netherlands.
Bollards intended to keep cars off cycle paths can become hazardous obstacles for cyclists, particularly those with limited mobility or those using wider, adapted bicycles. According to the Fietsersbond, an average of six cyclists are injured per day due to collisions with such obstacles, often caused by poor visibility or non-compliance with safety guidelines.
Participants can use an online map to report the locations of these bollards. The goal is to provide municipalities with accurate data so they can improve path design and enhance cyclist safety.
