Netherlands bicycle path bollard safety initiative

Overview

The Fietsersbond and engineering firm Haskoning organized a national ‘Paaltjescheckdag’ (Bollard Check Day) on Saturday, September 19, to address safety hazards on Dutch bicycle paths. The initiative targeted bollards designed to prevent car access that pose risks to cyclists, particularly those with limited mobility or those using wider, adapted bicycles. The Fietsersbond reported that collisions with such obstacles result in an average of more than six injuries per day, often due to poor visibility or failure to meet safety guidelines.

Following the campaign, the municipality of Tilburg has begun removing more than one hundred bollards to improve road safety, specifically focusing on the Reeshof and De Blaak neighborhoods. Local authorities are removing obstacles that are no longer strictly necessary to prevent illegal car traffic, utilizing CROW guidelines and data from the Fietsersbond ‘Paaltjesmelder’ (Bollard Reporter) to guide the process.

Rob van Mierlo, chairman of FietsForum Tilburg, noted that these bollards have contributed to dangerous situations, including fatalities in the region last year. While official records show approximately 400 single-vehicle bicycle accidents annually in Tilburg involving ambulance services, officials believe the actual number is higher as many minor incidents go unreported.
