Fietsersbond organizes national bollard safety check day
The Fietsersbond and engineering firm Haskoning are organizing the national ‘Paaltjescheckdag’ (Bollard Check Day) on Saturday, September 19. The initiative aims to address safety concerns regarding bollards placed on bicycle paths.
While intended to prevent cars from entering cycling lanes, these bollards can act as dangerous obstacles for cyclists. According to the Fietsersbond, thousands of cyclists are injured annually in collisions with bollards, averaging more than six incidents per day. Issues include poor visibility and bollards that do not meet safety guidelines.
The campaign specifically highlights risks for less agile cyclists and those using wider, adapted bicycles. By mapping the location and function of these bollards, the organizers hope to provide municipalities with the necessary data to improve path safety and remove unnecessary or hazardous obstacles.
