Nigeria Football Federation enters reform process after mass NFF resignations
Following the mass resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) executive committee, including President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, FIFA has formally accepted the departures. A high-level meeting was held in Zurich between FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and a Nigerian delegation led by National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade.
FIFA has pledged to support a comprehensive reform roadmap for Nigerian football, focusing on governance, administration, and youth development. To manage the transition, the NSC is expected to recommend an eight-member Normalisation Committee to FIFA. FIFA will conduct integrity and eligibility checks on all candidates and is expected to have significant influence over the selection process. Reports suggest AbdulHakeem Uthman Mustapha, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and member of FIFA’s Anti-Racism Committee, is a leading candidate to chair the committee.
The leadership vacuum comes at a critical time, following the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons' absence from the 2027 Women's World Cup. While reforms are underway, stakeholders have called for continued focus on immediate competitive responsibilities, such as the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
