By mid-September 2026, the administrative crisis within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) progressed as international authorities conducted on-site investigations. Following the mass resignations of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and several Executive Committee members on August 27, FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) suspended the NFF electoral process originally set for September 27.

Following a September 1 meeting in Zurich between a National Sports Commission (NSC) delegation and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, FIFA and CAF dispatched representatives to Abuja for a two-day fact-finding mission. This mission aimed to assess the legal and governance circumstances surrounding the leadership vacuum, which was precipitated by poor performances from national teams, including the Super Falcons' failure to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup.

The assessment revealed a significant divide among stakeholders regarding the restructuring process. Representatives from players' unions, coaches, and referees' associations have advocated for a “stakeholder-driven normalization process” to ensure equal representation on the board and congress. Conversely, state football association chairmen have resisted the appointment of a normalization committee, arguing that the existing NFF Congress has the capacity to resolve the leadership vacuum internally.

Adding to the calls for reform, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) submitted an 18-page position paper to the joint FIFA/CAF mission. SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin argued that the vacuum presents an opportunity for an “institutional reset” rather than temporary fixes, warning that elections under existing frameworks might repeat past governance weaknesses. SWAN also proposed ending a “16-year exclusion of sports media from formal football governance” by seeking statutory recognition and structured media participation in stakeholder consultations.
