Nigeria Football Federation faces FIFA and CAF leadership probe
A joint delegation from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) arrived in Abuja to conduct a two-day assessment of the leadership crisis within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The intervention follows the mass resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and several Executive Committee members on August 27. In response to these developments, FIFA and CAF have suspended the NFF’s planned elective congress, which was originally scheduled for September 27.
The assessment mission aims to examine the legal, governance, and administrative implications of the leadership vacuum. Officials are also reviewing the NFF statutes, the federation's electoral processes, and the role of the Nigerian government in football affairs. The mission includes high-level representatives such as FIFA’s Ahmed Harraz and Rolf Tanner, and CAF’s Nnaemeka Olu.
The crisis comes amid scrutiny over the performance of Nigeria’s national teams and questions regarding the management of a ₦12bn government intervention fund intended for player allowances. Stakeholders, including former captain John Mikel Obi, have called for structural reforms and increased transparency to restore confidence in the sport.
