FIFA concludes fact-finding mission into Nigeria Football Federation crisis

FIFA and CAF have concluded a two-day fact-finding mission to Nigeria to address the ongoing leadership crisis within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The mission follows the mass resignation of former NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and other board members on August 27. This leadership vacuum was precipitated by the poor performance of Nigeria’s national teams, including the failure of the Super Falcons to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and recent setbacks for the Super Eagles.

The assessment has revealed divergent views among stakeholders regarding the path to reform. Representatives from players' unions, coaches, and referees' associations have advocated for a stakeholder-driven normalization process to restructure the NFF, emphasizing equal representation on the board and congress.

In contrast, state football association chairmen, who hold significant voting power within the NFF Congress, have resisted the appointment of a normalization committee. These members argue that the existing NFF Congress possesses the necessary capacity to resolve the leadership vacuum internally. FIFA is expected to announce its decision on the matter following these consultations.
