Venezuela earthquake relief garners IMF funds, FIFA donation and Shakira support
The twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026 killed more than 3,800 people, injured nearly 17,000 and left about 17,900 homeless. The interim government has set up 89 temporary camps with a capacity of 24,280 beds, currently sheltering over 17,100 evacuees.
The International Monetary Fund is discussing the release of roughly US$ 350 million of Venezuela’s own reserve assets to fund emergency humanitarian needs. At the same time, FIFA’s Foundation announced a US$ 1 million (about R$ 5 million) humanitarian grant, while the FIFA Global Citizen Education fund, with Colombian singer Shakira as a spokesperson, will contribute US$ 500 000 to restore schools and support teachers in the affected regions.
The United Nations has launched a flash response plan for 1.3 million severely affected people, seeking US$ 296 million from donors to cover shelter, water, food, health services and logistics. These combined efforts illustrate a coordinated international humanitarian response to the disaster.
