Shakira urges France, Germany fund Venezuela school rebuild

Overview

Humanitarian assistance for the June 24 twin earthquakes in Venezuela continues to expand. Shakira, representing the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, has appealed on Instagram to French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for contributions to a $100 million campaign to rebuild over 430 destroyed schools as the new school year begins. The fund already received a $500,000 pledge from the FIFA Foundation, a $100,000 donation from Portugal’s Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, and a $5 million commitment from Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, alongside support from other international figures.

The FIFA Foundation has allocated an additional US$ 1 million from its Humanitarian Fund for emergency assistance and reconstruction, particularly in La Guaira. The International Monetary Fund is discussing the release of roughly US$ 350 million of Venezuela’s reserve assets as readily available liquidity for urgent relief.

UN OCHA’s six‑month response plan still targets 1.3 million people and manages about US$ 300 million in aid, seeking an additional US$ 296 million. Temporary camps shelter over 17,100 evacuees across 89 sites.

Updated casualty figures record 4,490 deaths, 16,740 injuries and at least 18,000 displaced persons, with more than 31,000 receiving medical care. Portugal contributed US$ 100,000, and the UN flash appeal remains at US$ 296 million.

Shakira’s latest video reiterated the appeal to Macron and Merz and highlighted further supporters, including Venezuelan singer Danny Ocean, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, UN Deputy Secretary‑General Amina Mohammed and Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Satyarthi. The campaign seeks funds to rebuild schools, train teachers and provide books and learning materials so children can return to class when schools reopen in September.
