Azerbaijan hosts inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival

The inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from October 24 to 30. The tournament features 189 national teams, including 78 associations making their first-ever appearance in a FIFA World Cup competition.

To prioritize youth development, the event utilizes a unique eight-a-side format on smaller pitches, with matches consisting of two 20-minute halves. Unlike traditional knockout tournaments, this festival model ensures all participating teams continue playing until the final day. Following an initial group stage, teams are redistributed into six different tiers based on performance to compete for category-specific titles, with the winner of Tier A being crowned the official world champion.

The tournament has drawn international attention due to the participation of Russia, marking its return to FIFA competition. This has led to boycotts from 19 nations, including Germany, the United States, and Ukraine, though some federations cited other reasons for their absence.

Participating nations include a wide range of teams such as Vietnam, Nigeria, Bulgaria, Mexico, Pakistan, and Moldova, all seeking international experience through this new developmental platform.
