Inaugural FIFA U15 World Cup continues in Azerbaijan

Overview

The inaugural FIFA U15 Men’s World Cup and Festival continues in Baku, Azerbaijan, through October 30, 2026. The tournament features approximately 189 national teams competing in an 8-a-side format. Under FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme, teams are redistributed into six performance tiers following the initial stage, with only the Level A winner crowned world champion.

As the group stage concludes, various teams have secured positions for the second phase. In Group L, Italy completed a perfect run with five victories, including a 7-2 win over Hong Kong and a 6-1 win against Benin. Coach Enrico Battisti has noted the need for “greater collective discipline and clinical finishing” despite the high scoring.

In Group G, Portugal leads with 12 points, followed by Wales. Indonesia, despite a 1-2 loss to Portugal, secured a 6-1 victory over Burundi to finish fourth in the group. In Group B, Algeria secured the top spot after an unbeaten run, including a 4-0 win over Malawi and a 3-3 draw with Oman. Albania also earned a place in Tier A after finishing first in Group Y with five consecutive wins.

In Group K, Senegal and Cameroon advanced to the top tiers after India suffered a 1-6 defeat to Senegal, resulting in India being placed in Tier C.

South American teams continue to perform strongly. Paraguay finished first in Group V and will move into Group A for the second phase. Argentina, having secured a 3-0 victory against Suriname, is scheduled to face Malawi to conclude their group stage matches.

The event remains a point of geopolitical interest due to the return of Russia to international football. While the Russian flag is hoisted, no national anthems are played, a policy that has drawn criticism from Ukrainian officials.
