FIFA to reform football contract termination rules by 2027

FIFA is set to implement significant reforms to international football law starting January 1, 2027. The changes target Article 17 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, which governs the consequences of unilateral contract terminations without just cause.

The reform aims to balance the rights of clubs to protect their contracts with the labor freedom of players. Under the new framework, compensation for breaking a contract must be reasonable and proportional to actual agreement data, rather than being set at exorbitant amounts that effectively prevent a player from moving to a new club.

The decision follows consultations between FIFA and various stakeholders, including FIFPRO, the European Club Association, UEFA, and CONMEBOL. The new rules will distinguish between pre-agreed release clauses and compensation awarded after a unilateral breach, seeking to make the calculation of such costs more objective and predictable.
