Figure AI humanoid supports BMW production of 30,000 vehicles

Figure AI’s Figure 02 humanoid robot has completed a significant pilot program at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. During the operation, the robot contributed to the production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 models by handling over 90,000 sheet metal parts.

The robot’s primary role involved picking parts from racks, transporting them to welding fixtures, and positioning them with high precision to support existing industrial welding robots. The pilot recorded over 1,250 hours of operation, during which the humanoid walked approximately 200 miles and took roughly 1.2 million steps.

To meet manufacturing demands, the Figure 02 was required to adhere to strict performance metrics, including a 37-second part-setting time and a placement success rate exceeding 99% per shift. While humanoids represent a visible advancement in physical AI, industry analysts note that much of the broader value in the sector is expected to stem from autonomous mobile robots, drones, and smart inspection systems.
