BMW smart factory automation integration
Overview
BMW Group has reached a milestone in its transition toward smart factory operations, reporting that its Automated Driving In-Plant (AFW) technology has completed one million autonomous vehicle movements within its production and logistics areas. This system, which utilizes cloud architecture and external LiDAR sensors, is currently active across sites in Germany and the United Kingdom, averaging 3,500 automated movements daily.
Furthering its automation efforts, BMW has also integrated Figure AI’s Figure 02 humanoid robot into its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. During a pilot program, the humanoid robot supported the production of over 30,000 X3 models by handling approximately 90,000 sheet metal parts. The robot achieved a placement success rate exceeding 99% per shift, marking a significant application of physical AI in automotive manufacturing.
