Fiji and Sri Lanka launch nationwide dengue control programs

Fiji will begin a chemical‑free dengue control programme in July, deploying around 6,000 mosquito lamps that attract and electrocute vectors, along with bed nets, rapid test kits and fly traps. The initiative is a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the Hong Kong‑based GX Foundation, which has previously used the technology in Honduras and Timor‑Leste.

Sri Lanka has started an island‑wide mosquito‑control drive in response to a surge in dengue cases. Health officials are coordinating inspections to eliminate stagnant‑water breeding sites, urging residents to clear containers, cover water tanks, clean drains and use repellents. The campaign aims to curb transmission of the Aedes aegypti mosquito and reduce strain on the national health system.
