Filipino domestic workers suffer abuse and exploitation in Saudi Arabia

Amnesty International’s briefing documents the systematic overwork, exploitation and sexual assault endured by Filipino women employed as domestic workers in private Saudi households. Testimonies describe 14‑hour workdays, lack of rest, confinement to the employer’s home and wages as low as $400 a month, leaving workers unable to support their families.

In a related case, a 45‑year‑old overseas Filipino worker fled her Riyadh employer on Aug. 2 after severe maltreatment left her undernourished. She sought protection at the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh and is awaiting repatriation. Philippine officials, including Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and Isabela City Mayor Miguel Angelo Yulo, confirmed government assistance and coordination to bring her home.

Both reports highlight the urgent need for stronger labour inspections and legal safeguards for migrant domestic workers in Saudi Arabia.
