Filmmaker Georgina Lightning dies in Alberta rodeo accident

Indigenous Canadian filmmaker and actor Georgina Lightning has died at age 63 following a fatal accident at a rodeo event. The incident occurred at the Enoch Park Race Track in Alberta while Lightning was working on a documentary about Indian Relay, an extreme equestrian sport practiced by North American Indigenous peoples.

During the event, a horse veered off the track and struck Lightning while she was in a designated media area. Although emergency responders provided immediate assistance, she died at the scene. Alberta Occupational Health and Safety is currently investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Lightning was a pioneering figure in the film industry, recognized as the first North American Indigenous woman to direct a major feature film. She co-founded Tribal Alliance Productions to increase opportunities for Indigenous storytellers and had appeared in notable works such as ‘Auf Wiedersehen, Pet’, ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’, and ‘The West Wing’. She was also slated to appear in the upcoming 2025 film ‘Die My Love’.

The Enoch Cree Nation has issued condolences to her family and requested that the public refrain from sharing accident footage on social media or speculating on the event to avoid hindering official investigations.
