Death of filmmaker Georgina Lightning at Alberta rodeo

Indigenous filmmaker and actor Georgina Lightning died at age 63 following an accident at the Enoch Park Race Track in Alberta. The incident occurred during an Indian relay event while Lightning was in a designated media area; a horse veered off the track and struck her.

Lightning, a member of the Samson First Nation and a pioneer who was the first North American Indigenous woman to direct a major feature film, was reportedly at the rodeo to work on a documentary about the sport.
