Filo Jet investigation reveals crew knew of severe technical failures
The investigation into the Filo Jet passenger ship disaster, which resulted in 28 deaths off the coast of Kyrenia, has revealed critical evidence from the vessel's Voyage Data Recorder (VDR). During the eighth court hearing, police reported that 68 days of audio data are available, with 12 days currently analyzed.
Recorded conversations indicate that the crew and captain were aware of severe technical issues prior to the accident. Captain Mustafa Öz was heard stating, “The ship is not a ship, the rudder is not a rudder,” while second captain Merve Nur Seraslan emphasized that the vessel required complete maintenance. Other identified issues include generator malfunctions, rudder failures, and exhaust system problems.
Evidence suggests company officials may have been aware of these faults. Investigators noted that the captain told a company representative that all malfunctions were known. Furthermore, the number of individuals wanted in connection with the investigation has increased to seven, while nine suspects remain in custody for an additional seven days.
Families of the victims have protested the proceedings, criticizing the slow pace of the investigation and demanding life sentences for those responsible for the negligence.
