Filo Jet shipwreck off Kyrenia coast

Overview

The Filo Jet passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Kyrenia while traveling between Kyrenia and Mersin/Taşucu. Of the 267 people on board, 239 have been rescued. The death toll is confirmed at 14, with 14 individuals remaining missing.

Search and rescue operations continue 24/7 with the support of the Turkish Navy and Coast Guard, utilizing vessels such as the TCG Alemdar and TCG Işın, 11 aircraft, and robotic underwater systems. Because the wreckage is located at a depth of approximately 554 meters, human diving is impossible; authorities are instead using remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) equipped with thermal cameras and sonar to scan the site and attempt to recover the vessel’s black box. A new search and rescue vessel equipped with specialized deep-sea technical capabilities is being mobilized from Istanbul to assist the operation.

Following the disaster, a judicial investigation has progressed significantly. Nine suspects, including the captain, crew members, and a director of the operating company Filo Denizcilik, appeared in court for the third time. They face charges of causing death by negligence, and the Kyrenia Accident Court has ordered them to remain in custody for an additional seven days.

Police have taken 295 statements and issued arrest warrants for five additional individuals. Investigators have seized digital evidence, including computers from the company director and a mobile phone belonging to the first mate. Notably, video footage sent by a missing passenger has been identified as a key piece of evidence, reportedly showing structural fractures on the vessel. Authorities are also awaiting responses from the Istanbul-based ship classification firm Turk Loydu regarding the vessel's certification.
