Filo Jet shipwreck investigation reveals improper structural repairs
Investigations into the Filo Jet shipwreck off the coast of Girne have revealed critical negligence. Court proceedings and police testimony indicate that the vessel's stem, a vital structural component, was repaired at Girne Port using improper materials like paint, silicone, and adhesive instead of being professionally serviced in a shipyard. Authorities stated that if the Ports Department had been notified of these structural repairs, the ship would not have been granted permission to sail.
Search operations conducted by the Optimus Prime vessel have thoroughly scanned the wreckage at a depth of 554 meters. While no additional bodies were found within the ship beyond the 15 confirmed deceased, the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) has been recovered and handed over to the police for forensic analysis. The disaster, which occurred on August 30, resulted in 15 deaths and left 13 people missing from the original 267 passengers and crew.
A judge has ordered an additional seven days of detention for nine suspects, including the company director, captains, and engineers, facing charges of causing death through negligence and carelessness. Investigators are also examining digital evidence and company accounting records to trace the unauthorized repairs.
