Filo Jet shipwreck investigation reveals VDR was deactivated before sinking

Investigations into the Filo Jet shipwreck, which occurred near Kyrenia on August 30, have revealed that the vessel's Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) was deactivated on August 28 at 20:39, two days before the accident. During court proceedings in Kyrenia, investigators reported hearing footsteps on the device just before it was turned off. Audio recordings from the bridge prior to the shutdown included discussions regarding the ship taking on water in rough weather and concerns that the company would not invest in repairs.

To date, search operations have recovered 19 bodies, including those identified via DNA as Julia Özcan, Süleyman Erdoğan, and Ayhan Özcan. One body was recovered from a depth of 649 meters. The search for the final missing person, 3-year-old Anni Asel Hilaloğlu, continues.

Nine suspects, including the company director and ship captains, have had their detention periods extended by seven days. They face charges of causing death through negligence and carelessness. Families of the victims have gathered at the court, calling for accountability from those who authorized the vessel's departure despite its reported condition.
