Filo Jet disaster: VDR recordings reveal steering failures and warnings

New details have emerged regarding the Filo Jet maritime disaster that occurred off the coast of Kyrenia on August 30, resulting in the deaths of 27 or 28 people. During the ninth court appearance for nine suspects, police investigators presented findings from the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR).

The VDR contains 68 days of recordings, 32 of which have been analyzed. These recordings include discussions regarding steering system malfunctions, generator and exhaust issues, and damage to the ship's radar and camera systems. Notably, the recordings capture crew members stating, “The ship will sink,” and “We are the only healthy ones on board; everything else is half-finished.”

Evidence also suggests that during previous voyages, passengers had complained to the bridge about the vessel taking on water and requested that the ship return to port, but the captain reportedly continued the journey. One passenger reportedly fainted from fear during a prior trip.

Nine individuals, including the ship's director, captains, and engineers, remain in custody for an additional seven days. The investigation is ongoing, with search efforts continuing for one missing person and experts from Turkey expected to arrive to examine the technical aspects of the accident.
