Filo Jet ferry tragedy: 14 dead and 14 missing as deep-water search begins

Search and rescue operations continue for the Filo Jet, a fast catamaran ferry that capsized off the coast of Kyrenia on August 30 while traveling to Taşucu. The death toll has risen to 14, with 14 people still reported missing.

Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that a specialized private company has been authorized to conduct deep-water search operations to assist in locating the missing passengers and the vessel's black box. The wreck is located at a depth of approximately 554 meters.

Rescue efforts are being conducted 24/7 by the Turkish Navy and Coast Guard, utilizing vessels such as the TCG Alemdar and TCG Işın, alongside remotely operated underwater vehicles. High-level meetings have taken place in Ankara involving Turkish officials to coordinate technical, judicial, and operational responses to the tragedy.
