Kalshi prediction market sees $3.9 billion in trading from users aged 18-21
Prediction markets are seeing significant growth, with the platform Kalshi recording over $171 billion in total trading volume so far this year. A notable trend is the participation of young adults; users aged 18 to 21 have traded an estimated $3.9 billion on the platform this year, accounting for approximately 3.14% of total volume.
Unlike traditional sportsbooks or casinos, Kalshi is regulated as a financial market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This allows individuals aged 18 and older to trade event contracts based on the outcomes of real-world occurrences, such as economic indicators, political elections, and weather conditions. These binary contracts function similarly to a stock exchange, where prices reflect the collective probability of an event occurring.
While these markets offer new ways to hedge risk and assess future uncertainties, they have drawn scrutiny from lawmakers and addiction experts. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential for gambling-like activities among young adults and the subsequent impact on their mental health and financial stability.
