Financial support options for diabetes patients and seniors in Poland
In Poland, various financial support mechanisms are available for individuals with chronic illnesses and disabilities. For people living with diabetes, monthly support from the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) can range from 792 PLN to 4,353 PLN. However, a diagnosis alone does not guarantee eligibility; the Provincial Disability Assessment Team (WZON) must award between 70 and 100 support points based on how much assistance the individual requires for daily activities. This assessment focuses on functional capacity and complications, such as kidney failure or vision damage, rather than just the medical diagnosis.
Additionally, a care allowance (zasiłek pielęgnacyjny) is available for seniors and people with disabilities to help cover costs related to daily functioning. In 2026, this monthly benefit is set at 215.84 PLN. Eligibility extends to seniors over 75, children with disabilities, and adults with significant or moderate disabilities acquired before age 21. Unlike some other benefits, this allowance is reviewed every three years rather than through annual indexation, with the next verification scheduled for 2027.
