Diabetes and disability support in Poland
Overview
In Poland, healthcare and social welfare systems provide various forms of support for individuals managing chronic illnesses, particularly diabetes.
The Polish Ministry of Health has proposed a draft regulation to expand insulin pump reimbursement to include adults over the age of 26. This expansion, intended to take effect on January 1, 2027, would cover patients with type 1 and type 3 diabetes who meet specific medical criteria, such as glycemic instability or recurrent severe hypoglycemia. The National Health Fund (NFZ) is expected to fund the program, which is projected to benefit over 3,000 patients in its first year.
Beyond medical device reimbursement, financial assistance is available through the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS), with monthly support ranging from 792 PLN to 4,353 PLN depending on disability assessment points. Additionally, a care allowance (zasiłek pielęgnacyjny) provides monthly benefits to seniors and people with disabilities to assist with daily functioning costs.
