Finland and Sweden intercept Russian military aircraft over Gulf of Finland
Finnish and Swedish fighter jets conducted their first joint operational identification mission on Thursday, September 24, 2026, intercepting a formation of Russian military aircraft over the Gulf of Finland. The mission was carried out by Finnish F/A-18 Hornet and Swedish JAS 39 Gripen jets as part of their Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) service.
The intercepted Russian formation consisted of a Tu-134 transport aircraft, along with MiG-31 and Su-30 fighters. The aircraft were operating in international airspace and did not violate the sovereign airspace of Finland or Sweden.
This joint operation follows a recent agreement between Helsinki and Stockholm to deepen air defense cooperation to secure the northern region and NATO's eastern flank. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson noted that while the Baltic Sea is currently vulnerable, it has never been better protected due to this enhanced cooperation.
